OLAFUR ELIASSON

The Weather Exibition

Author: Laura Leone
Multimedia: Stefano Abbadessa Mercanti

Olafur Eliasson is a young artist born in Copenhagen by Iceland parents, his works of art have been exposed at the 'Solomon R Guggenhaeim Museum of New York.

Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angles, he represented Demark at the last 'Biennale of Venice'. Elements such as time, water, light, temperatures are the materials that the Danish artist uses for his works. Ellianson paints, above all, for the exploring world in which every individual perceives the changes in climatic conditions, how each one of us behaves in different ways re-acting to the surrounding environment, and how the city is a contributing factor in our perception of nature.
From this research derives the idea of a gigantic sun formed by hundreds of lamps with mono frequency; usually used for street illumination, a sky created by an immense mirror and fog that in some places becomes more dense and forms clouds, a fairy tale atmosphere worthy of the Grimm brothers.

The work that we are discussing is certainly not conventional, nor static, but is, like nature, in continual transformation, different every day. This perception of evolution is due also to the diverse ways in which spectators participate, becoming an integral part of the representation. There is the person who lies on the floor and gets pleasure from the warmth that the sun radiates, and there are those who take pleasure in creating human figures reflected in the mirror and then there are those who admire the enormous ball of fire resembling a beautiful tropical sunset miraclulously arrived in London.
