from 15 March to 15 April 2007,
vernissage Thurstday 15 March at 6:30 pm
The exhibition includes works from the most important cultures of the Ivory Coast, of Burkin Mali, of Ghana and of Liberia. This ensemble of sculptures, which come from a homogeneous geographical area, demonstrates a coherence and harmony, in the diversity of forms and variety of the styles, and strengthens the idea of a refined aesthetic in African art. There are 20 ancient works in wood and metal, figures, masks and objects of use of Attie, Baule, Dan, Kulango, Bambara, Dogon, Mossi etc.
The abstract ddei forms of two ceremonial spoons kulango and Dan may surprise us, besides the classical masque of the Baule family or the Bamlbara marionette in cubist style. Outstanding is the splendid and important feminine figure Attie with a beautiful black patina (45 cms high), a real masterpiece of the southern Ivory Coast, which represents a woman of high rank, as witness the refined hairstyle, traditional scarifications and rich decorations.
