DENNIS OPPENHEIM

Dennis Oppenheim was born on September 6, 1938 in Electric City near the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State, USA. His family moved to Richmond, California where he went to high school and then to art school at the California College of Arts and Crafts. After a short time in Honolulu where his first child Kristin was born to his wife Karen, he returned to the Bay Area and obtained an M.F.A. from Stanford University in 1965. In 1966 he moved to New York where he met Smithson, Heizer and other artist who were forging new ideas in contemporary art.
His first one person show in New York was at the John Gibson Gallery in 1968, followed by the first solo show in Europe at Yvon Lambert in Paris and in the same year with a show at Francoise Lambert in Milano. Land Art, Body Art, video and performance in the sixties was followed by installations which questioned the nature of the artistic process, the self and the concept of representation in the seventies.
Large-scale machine iconography was used in the sculpture eighties as a metaphor for the thought process. Metaphor in works in the nineties were develope from altered common forms. As the artist constructed larger, permanent public work it became architectural in scale and vision.
Retrospectives of his work have been organized by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, Musee d¹Art Contemporain in Montreal and PS 1 in New York. He continues to travel and show extensively around the world, with a focus on public commissions. Although divorced from his wife Alice Aycock in 1982, their relationship continues to be meaningful. Dennis lives in Tribeca in New York in a loft he moved to 1976.
