Spanish scultor, born at St Sebastian in 1924 and dying there in 2002.
Began to sculpt in 1947,
after studying architecture. From 1948 to 1951 he lived in Paris where he studied the cubist
and abstract aspects of his art. With a deep love of materials (wolod, stone, iron, steel, cement)
Chillida has created monumental forms which are basic and essential, with a constructive rigour.
at times serving a delicate sensibility.
Among his works, the doors for the Basilica di Aranzazu
(1954), Pettine per vento VI for the offices of UNESCO in Paris (1956-1968), Meeting place
II for the Plaza del Rey di Madrid (1971) and the Meeting place III for the Miro Foundation
at Barcellona (1973), Homage to Calder (1979), Nere ai taren extea for the city of Guernica (1987). He exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia in 1990, at the Reina Sofia di Madrid in 1998 and had an antholgy of his works presented at the Jean Pomme Gallery in Paris in 2001. From 1984 the old Basque farm house at St Sebatian has hosted the Chillida Foundation and the Chillida Leku Museum.
