Franco Guerzoni
born in 1948 in Modena, where he lives and works. From the
beginning of the 60’s he dedicates himself to the research
of the system of representation of the imagine through the
use of photography, in a context of strong conceptual influence
and an exchange of ideas with young artists from Modena, for
example Franco Vaccari, Claudio Parmiggioni, Giuliano Della
Casa, Carlo Cremaschi, the photographer Luigi Ghirri and others
that work on research for new expressions.
They belong to the line of Archaeology, the first personal
of Guerzoni from Bologna cared by Renato Barilli in 1973,
the collective Milanese ‘Blow up’ 1976 cared again
by Renato Barilli and the collective Photo-graphics in 1977
cared by Arturo Carlo Quintavalle.
During this period the artist gives particular attention to
the archaeological world, where he investigates the aspects
of cultural layers, fascinated by the idea of antique as a
loss, without being tempted to re-construct it. Simultaneously
he elaborates books, works that deal with the travel, from
the reproduction of the image and its multifarious readings.
The turning point in his artistic career arrives in the 80’s,
where he is engaged in the passage of love for the page of
the book to the realization of large carte parietali gessoes,
involved in an idea of imaginary geography. During this period
in we find the exhibition Milanese ‘Cosa fanno oggi
I concetuali?’ realized in 1986 at the ‘Rotonda
della Besana’ cared by Renato Barilli, and ‘Scavi’
superficial in 1987, cared by Paolo Fossati at the Civica
Gallery in Modena Guerzoni at the end of the 80’s begins
research on the surface intended as depth, this indicates
the beginning of large cycles of works among which are ‘Decoration
and Ruins’, presented in a personal hall at ‘Biennale
of Venice’ in 1990 and Restauri provvisori exhibited
at the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art in Bologna cared by
Pier Giovanni Castagnoli. A vast retrospective of the artist,
with 30 years of research as testimony, has been co-ordinated
by Paola Jori in 1996 in occasion of his personal exhibition
at the ‘Civica di Arte Contemporanea in Trento’
in December 1999 they were moved to Palazzo Massari of Ferrara,
the personale Orienti cared by Pier Giovanni Castagnoli simultaneously
at ‘Bianca e Volta’ at Casa dell’Ariosto,
always at Reggio Emilia cared by Fabrizio D’Amico. In
2005 the installation of ‘Pagine Furiose’ realized
in the Institute of Italo Francese in Bologna.
His works can be found in public and private collections in
Italy and abroad.
