Following the press communique of 26 th September, broadcast on the "maison de Radio France", the first actual rendezvous of the Biennale was fixed for the opening of the exhibition 1st October. On that occasion there was a cultural demonstration "There are too many artists!", a public demostration, open to all, organised by the Collective of artists: Laurent d'Ursel, Jean -Francois Jans, Therry Horguelin, Daniel Plasschaert, Jean-Pierre Gougeau http:/:tropdartistes.be,http:// www.loeuvrette.be, http://tropdartistes.biennaledeparis.org.
These Belgian artists, headed by Laurent d'Ursel demonstrated in Paris, with the aim of publically involving a great number of personalities from the world of art., and others.
The demostration was supported by other Belgian artists, who came to Paris by bus from
Brussels.
"There are too many artists!" is a street demonstration, like many others, but at the same time a protest supported by many, both outside and inside the world of art. They are voicing concern about how art is being practised today, whether from a political or comumunal point of view, due particularly to ever-increasing state intervention". This protest has, however, generally been voiced under the cloak of anonymity.
There are two aims: to transform the event itself into a practice of artists and ask for a reduction of the number of artists. "Too many artists!" is a contemporary exclamation uttered in a democracy, but is addressed also to the problem of "too much" in general.
This street demonstration was officialy authorized ; at the same time a campaign has been launched to make people aware of the issue, and to mobilize public opinion; leaflets were distributed on the spot and a communique sent to the press. Finally a check of the figures of the organisers with those of the police will enable us to know how many took part in the demonstration.
The manifestos, slogans and key words referred exclusively to the eccessive number of artists without specifying any criteria of selection.
The demonstration in Paris was preceeded by another similar one, held Saturday 30th October
in Marseilles.
The art collective will shortly be busy with other demonstrations and related activities, in Canada and Spain.
