With which imagine shall I begin? The grey cobbled paved Ferraris road or the red bricks of a porch in Bologna, a tall medieval tower or the quiet stretch of a delta river without time? The panorama of the city of Emilia and its country landscapes – my origins are partly Ferrarese and partly Bolognese – have often appeared in my films, as protagonist, or as the background but always important, necessary, following my itinerary as director, from a documentary to a full length film. Via dei Piopponi in Ferrara is my childhood road. When I was small, 4 or 5years old – due to my persistent ashma my parents had to take me often to the city for medical visits and check-ups. The paediatrician lived in the area, of what I came to know as “the road” for antonomasia.
