UZBEKISTAN - The country of blue bricks

UzbekFlag1.jpg

Memories of a journey across Ubekistan

There is a land of dust and slender blades of grass. A far land of dreams. A distant  land which belongs, however, to the imaginery world of Marco Polo tucked away in the drawer of imagination, resistant to time. There are places which live inside us  which are not material but images of  desires and the capacity for abstraction. There is a city which belongs to myth, Samakand. Read article>>

The route of history
The territory of presentday  Uzbgelistan was crossed, like other states of central Asia, by a very important commercial route that, from  I B.C., enabled the Chinese Empire to come into contact with the Roman Empire. In reality, the exchanges between China and the Mediterranean happened in an indirect way, thanks to merchants of the Near East and the populations of Central Asia who Read article>>

THE ART OF UZBEKISTAN MOSAICS

Author: Sveva Battifoglia

Looking at the mosaics which adorn various madras, mosques, mausoleums and minarets of central Asia we must not never forget that Islam has forbade the artistic representation of living creatures. In consequence, various depictions were ornamented with general abstract forms, geometrical, floral and with calligraphic motifs  and stellar symbols. The last, especially, will be connected with the astronomical and scientific Read article>>

The human landscape of Uzbeskistan is chartacterised by the co-existence of different races, groups which over time have settled in this territory, an important stage on the Silk Road. Characteristics of this region of central Asia are the differentiations of identity  which have produced cultural sincretisms between oriental symbols and western ones. The nature of the climate we find today can be checked against the descriptions of Marco Polo reported in his travel notes. However in the historical process of Uzbekistan, Islamisation has been the real universal force of cohesion, bringing order to a confused Read article>>
